To produce cigarettes having a combustible strip 2a, Fig. 1, inside the cigarette paper 4a and carrying abrasibly ignitable material 3 accessible via a hole 104 in the paper 4a, a machine is employed comprising a punching device 8, Fig. 2, for forming suitably spaced holes in a continuous cigarette paper strip 4, a rotary cutter 15 for severing strips 2a from a corresponding continuous strip having the material 3 along e.g. its centre, and a vacuum conveyer 16 which transfers the severed strips 2a past a glueing device 18 for application to the strip 4 in registration with the holes. The strip 4 subsequently passes to a continuous-rod machine and, according to whether the holes are separated by one or two cigarette lengths, the cigarettes formed thereby are severed adjacent the strips 2a or midway between them and centrally through them as shown in Fig. 1. The punching device 8 may be of a type that burns holes in the strip 4 but as shown is a rotary punch coacting with a spring-loaded die roller 9. Slackadjusting devices 10, 110 consisting of pairs of rollers eccentrically mounted on angularly adjustable discs are positioned between the punch 8 and, on the one hand, a feed roller 5 where the strip 4 is marked with printing by a device 6 and, on the other, a spring-loaded roller 21 against which the conveyer 16 applies the strips 2a to the strip 4, to ensure that the holes do not register with the printing but register with the strips 2a. The conveyer 16 has operative arms 116 having radial bores which connect with a central suction chamber except when their inner ends pass over a stationary baffle plate so placed therein as temporarily to cut off the suction as the arms 116 pass the roller 21.
