Abstract

746,150. Fluid - pressure railway brakes. WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. July 22, 1954 [Aug. 27,1953], No. 21397/54. Class 103 (1). A control valve assembly for fluid-pressure railway braking equipment intended particularly for trains in Europe wherein it is likely that as many as fifty or sixty per cent of the cars may have ineffective brakes or no brake equipment at all, comprises a main diaphragm control unit 5, a quick service valve device 6, a brake cylinder inshot valve device 7, a service selector valve device 8 and a reservoir release valve device 9, the assembly being connected to a brake pipe 2, auxiliary reservoir 3, brake cylinder 4, control reservoir 10, and quick service reservoir 11. The device is characterized principally in that charging of the auxiliary reservoir 3 from the brake pipe 2 takes place through conduit 22 and a passage 18 in the stem of the main diaphragm assembly 5 to chamber 17 above diaphragm 14 and then past restriotion 17, passage 151 and valve 57. If the auxiliary reservoir is charged at such a rate that the pressure above the diaphragm 14 in chamber 17 exceeds that below in chamber 15, which is in communication with the control reservoir 10, the diaphragm assembly will be moved downwardly thus tending to cut off passage 22 to restrict the rate of charging. Since the brake cylinder pressure acts in chamber 33 above top diaphragm 30 a similar regulation will take place during brake release of brake pipe pressure is increasing at an excessive rate. Connection between chamber 33 and the brake cylinder 4 is by way of chamber 103, which is in communication by choke passage 115, conduits 114 and 94, to the space below valve element 99 which may be lifted to allow the pressure to act below diaphragm 90 of the inshot valve assembly. It may thus be arranged by a suitable choice of the size of the choke 115 that when the pressure in the brake cylinder is increased to about ten pounds the valve 104 will be lifted to cut off flow to the brake cylinder except through restriction 37.
