[Also in Group XXII] In a method of making dies (see Group XXII) the inner surface of the die is coated with an acid-proof substance, such as lacquer, which hardens after application, a positive pattern of the exact shape required is pressed into the die to remove the coating at those parts of the inner surface against which the pattern bears, the pattern is then removed and the inner surface is subjected to acid attack to etch away the exposed die metal: the etching operation is repeated as many times as necessary. The lacquer is applied by painting, spraying or dipping.
