Abstract

745,973. Pipe joints. AEROQUIP CORPORATION. Jan. 18, 1954 [Feb. 13, 1953], No. 1458/54. Class 99(1). A compression joint for connecting a rigid tube 10 to a coupling adaptor 12 having external threading 14 and a bevelled end surface 16 comprises a coupling nut 22 slidable on the tube and screwing on to the adaptor 12, a recess 28 in the nut surrounding the end of the tube 10, a first sleeve member 18 slidable upon the tube within the recess 28 and having a bevelled end 18d cooperating with the bevelled end 32 of the recess 28, and a second sleeve member 20 having an interior tapered surface 20a and a bevelled end 20d engaging the end 16 of the adaptor, the sleeve 18 on tightening of the nut 22 being forced against the tapered surface 20a so that its end is deformed into biting engagement with the tube 10 at B, Fig. 2, while the end of the tube is held in a recess 36 in the sleeve 20. The bevelled surface 18d on the sleeve 18 is originally at a small angle to the co-operating bevelled surface 32, as shown in Fig. 1, the two surfaces being brought into mating contact on tightening of the nut 22 whereby the associated end of the sleeve 18 is deformed into firm gripping relationship with the tube 10 at A, Fig. 2.
