Abstract
A process for producing an N,N-dialkylaminoethylamine comprises hydrogenating an N,N - dialkylaminoacetonitrile at superatmospheric pressure, at a temperature below 110 DEG C., and in the presence of a Raney cobalt catalyst. Preferred reaction temperatures are 60 DEG to 90 DEG C., and the use of diluents such as cyclohexane, benzene, ether and dioxane is advantageous. Anhydrous ammonia may be added to suppress side-reactions. N-alkyl substituents mentioned are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, hexyl and 2-ethylhexyl groups. In example (1) N,N-diethylaminoethylamine is prepared by hydrogenation at 1500 lb./sq. in. of N,N - diethylaminoacetonitrile in anhydrous cyclohexane in the presence of ammonia and Raney cobalt at 66 DEG to 80 DEG C. N,N-dimethylaminoethylamine is prepared similarly at 90 DEG C. The preparation of the catalyst is described. Specification 423,735 is referred to.
