A device for registering the output efficiency of machines such as ironing-machines, wherein an intermittent supply of flat articles are successively treated by passage through the machine, comprises a master counter driven from the main machine drive and subsidiary counters associated with each lane of the machine, driven only in the event of an article passing a given point in the feed path and driven in proportion to either the lengths of the gaps between successive articles or the length of each article, the counters being calibrated for linear measurement. Electrically-operated counters 7, 24, 25 in series with micro-switches 6, 11, 12 register respectively the potential output and the actual output in two lanes, the microswitches being actuated by cams 3, 9, 10 driven from the main drive 5 through reduction gearing, chains and sprockets. Selectively engageable clutches 19 and 20 are incorporated in the drive to each cam 9, 10 so that each is driven only when its associated clutch is engaged by the operation of a solenoid 28 or 29. A photoelectric cell 26 at the discharge end of each lane detects the passage of an article and actuates the corresponding solenoid 28, or 29 to control clutch 19 or 20 and also operates a secondary counter 33 or 34 to register the number of articles treated. Other methods of detecting and counting may be employed.
