Abstract

Apparatus for producing random slubs in filaments of synthetic material comprises a Geiger-Muller tube operated irregularly by cosmic radiation or local radioactivity to affect the flow of material to a spinning pump. The random pulses produced in the Geiger-Muller tube are amplified by valves (see Group XL (b)), and, intermittently and irregularly, current is caused to flow through the solenoid of an electromagnetic clutch connecting a drive to a spinning pump, e.g. an auxiliary pump as described in Specification 640,123. The solenoid may control the coupling of an auxiliary drive feeding the shaft of the spinning pump through an epicyclic differential gear together with the main drive, or through two free wheel sprockets on the pump shaft.
