Abstract

1,152,333. Endless conveyers; batching articles for packaging. SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE - GESELLSCHAFT. 24 May, 1966 [26 May, 1965], No. 23004/66. Headings B8A and B8C. A device for sorting into measured groups or columns a stack of flat articles, e.g. biscuits moving on a conveyer 1 comprises means 27 for advancing each successive leading article from the stack on to an incomplete group or column 6a and means for deactivating the conveyer 1 and the article advancing means 27 when a predetermined number or other measurement of articles has been recorded. In one embodiment, the conveyer 1 passing over rollers 2-5 is intermittently driven by a belt 11 passing over a roller (13), (Fig. 3, not shown), coaxial with the rollers 2, the belt being driven by a lever 9 reciprocated to and fro by an eccentric 8. The rollers 2 are connected to the roller (13) by a free wheel coupling which drives the rollers 2 on the forward stroke only of the lever 9. The upright biscuits 6 moving on the conveyer 1 are counted by the engagement of a toothed wheel 20 the movement of which causes, by a pivoted arm, a pair of electric contacts 24 to be closed, which registers the number of biscuits in a control device (47), (Fig. 4, not shown). The biscuits are individually transferred by a compressed air nozzle 27 on to a carriage 16 mounted on the rollers 3, 4 and reciprocated to and fro by a rod 12 connected to the lever 9, the transferred biscuits being pushed against a pivotable stop 17 by a slide 28 actuated by eccentrics 51 and 29. When a predetermined number of biscuits 6a has accumulated on the carriage 16, the air supply to the air nozzles 27 is discontinued by a magnetic valve (48) and the conveyer 1 stopped by a magnetic clutch (49) restraining movement of the lever 9. The slide 28 is moved between the columns 6 and 6a of biscuits by the further rotation of a main drive shaft 7 and the biscuits 6a removed from the carriage 16 by pivotable rubber strips (32), (Fig. 5, not shown) engaging the sides of the stack, the stop 17 being retracted within the carriage 16. The toothed counting wheel 20 may be replaced by a photo-electric cell or by a toggle lever (42), (Fig. 11, not shown) which is pivoted against the pressure of a spring (46) so that a pair of contacts (44) is opened and closed each time the lever (42) engages a biscuit. The biscuits may be divided into columns of a predetermined height, the conveyer 1 being stopped when the column reaches a predetermined length.
