Abstract
744,846. Lubricating. BENTON & STONE, Ltd. April 27, 1954 [May 1, 1953], No. 12078/53. Class 12 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A multi-point lubrication system comprises a plurality of small fluidoperable pumps corresponding in number to the positions to be supplied, each pump being of the diaphragm type and being provided with teat-like valves, a lubricant feed pipe and a motive-fluid pipe common to all the pumps, and motive-fluid controlling means adapted to effect simultaneous single actions of all the pumps at the desired time intervals. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a plurality of pumps a are connected by pipes f, g to a reservoir h for lubricant and by pipes n, o through a valve p to a pipe q leading to a source of compressed air. A by-pass pipe w leads from the pipe q to the top of the reservoir h, for use in priming the pumps. The valve p may be operated intermittently by a solenoid in a housing r, the solenoid being energized under the control of a timing device s. The control of the valve may alternatively be effected by means of a rotary cam acting on a lever. Each pump a, Fig. 2, comprises a chamber b provided on one side with a rubberlike inlet valve c and on the opposite side with a similar discharge valve d. One side of the chamber is bounded by a diaphragm i loaded by a spring and supported by an adjustable abutment k which is mounted in a chamber m adapted to receive compressed air. With each actuation of the control valve an impulse of compressed air acts on the diaphragm of each pump to cause discharge of lubricant through each outlet e. Instead of compressed air, a liquid such as oil may be used, this being supplied by a reciprocating pump.
