Abstract
744,609. Aircraft. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. Dec. 22, 1953 [Dec. 22, 1952], No. 32525/52. Class 4. In an aircraft, a skin surface exposed to the ambient air is provided with an aperture so shaped as to receive a body partially embedded therein with the edge of the aperture in substantially continuous peripheral contact with the body, and means for releasably attaching the body to the aircraft, a closure door for the aperture, means for supporting the door in a retracted position within the aircraft while a body is in the embedded position, and means for moving the door from its retracted position towards the aperture to close it when vacated. In the embodiment described, the body (e.g. a bomb) is attached to the door by a member 15 and supports 16, and a servomotor 25 is arranged to actuate double levers 20 to move the door 17 towards the aperture very rapidly at first to eject the body, and then slowly to seat the door on the aperture. Release may take place as the door is moved, or when the door has closed the aperture and the body is in the airstream, e.g. in the case of a guided missile, the engine of the missile being started before release. The servomotor 25 may be a hydraulic jack, a spring device cocked when the door is pushed to the retracted position, or, as shown, an explosive cartridge 28 firable within cylinder 32 to actuate the piston 27. A hydraulic dash-pot is preferably combined with the cylinder 32 operable in the last part of the piston stroke to seat the door slowly on resilient seating member 14. The geometry of the door and linkwork may be such that the body is ejected in a tilted position.
