Abstract
815,058. Aircraft ejection seat mechanism. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO. Ltd. May, 1, 1957 [June 7, 1956], No. 17596/56. Class 4. The firing mechanism of an aircraft ejection seat gun is restrained by two independent means releasable in either order, one of the means being released by displacement or jettisoning of a cover normally covering an opening in the aircraft through which the seat is to be ejected. The Fig. shows part of a fixed outer cylinder 3a and a movable inner cylinder 3 attached to the seat. The inner cylinder is screw threaded to receive the breech housing which is in two screw threaded parts 1a, 1, the latter receiving the cartridge 6 and being apertured at 4, 5 to admit pressure fluid from the cartridge to the cylinders. The firing mechanism comprises a tube 9 with a screw threaded base 11 apertured at 43 for passage of the firing pin, and with a crenulated end 14 for co-operation with a spanner. A firing pin carrier 17 is retained in tube 9 by a split ring 12, and has an axial bore containing the firing pin 16. The latter is spring urged to the firing position, but is restrained by a sear 42 passing through a slit in the firing pin and located between a pin 25 in the firing pin and rollers (not shown) on pins 62, 48 mounted in lugs 63, 49 on the carrier 17. The firing pin is also restrained by the engagement of pin 25 with cam surfaces 51 on a carrier 47a pivoted on pin 48, and normally held in the position shown by a plunger 52 secured to the cockpit canopy 53. Thus jettison of the canopy and manual withdrawal of sear 42 free the firing pin. A time delay is obtained by engagement of a rack (not shown) on the firing pin with a gear train terminating in a star wheel 39 and rocker 41. Movement of the firing pin after release is thus slowed down until the rack has disengaged from the gear train, whereupon the firing pin strikes home.
