Abstract

1,136,362. Single shot, drop breechblock rifle. STURM, RUGER & CO. Inc. 15 May, 1967 [16 May, 1966], No. 22388/67. Heading F3C. A single shot, drop breechblock rifle comprises a receiver 1, a drop breechblock 8 in the receiver 1, a hand lever 4 pivotally mounted on a pin 5 in the receiver and a hammer 12 pivotally mounted on the pin 5. An intermediate member 14<SP>1</SP> is also mounted on the pin 5 and cooperates with the hand lever 4 through a toggle linkage 30 and the hammer 12 through a shoulder 14. The intermediate member 14<SP>1</SP> is also provided with a lever arm 26, a lug 25 of which co-operates in its movement with cam faces 27, 28 of the breechblock 8. Initial movement of the breechblock is caused by the cooperation of a surface 40 thereof with a surface 29 of the lever arm 26. Movement of the intermediate member 14<SP>1</SP> cocks the hammer 12 which is then held in its cocked position by a spring-loaded, pivoted sear 97 (Fig. 2), the hammer being spring-loaded by a strut 20 and spring 21. The hammer energy is transferred to a firing-pin 19 through a pivoted striker 16 adjustably positioned in contact with the firing- pin 19 by a limit screw 18. A safety 102 is provided, the safety having a depending lug 114 which, in the safe position, blocks the end 113 of the sear 97. An additional safety means comprises a link 120 co-operating with a notch and a surface 112 of the safety through a stud 122 such that, when the safety is in the safe position, the link 120 urges a bar 126 into engagement with the hammer 12, the pressure between the bar 126 and hammer 12 being such that the hammer is disconnected from the sear 97 (Fig. 3, not shown). A cartridge ejecting mechanism comprises an ejector 45 (Fig. 8) pivotally mounted on the pin 5 and co-operating with the rim 50 of a cartridge 11 to which position it is urged by a spring (Fig. 11, not shown). The ejector 45 is mounted on the pin 5 such that it can pivot about the axis of the pin and in the direction of the axis of the pin. The ejector 45 is actuated by an over-centre spring-loaded actuator 54, an ejector cam 55 of which engages with one face a bearing surface 75 of the ejector 45 and with another face an end 74 of the hand-lever 4. Movement of the hand lever 4 pivots the cam 55 and hence the ejector 45 until the actuator passes its centre whence the cam is rapidly pivoted to snap rearwardly the ejector 45 to eject the cartridge. The spring loading of the actuator 54 may be dispensed with whereby the cartridge is ejected at the speed of movement of the hand lever 4. A roller 76 on the breechblock 8 urges the ejector 45 into its cartridge engaging position on movement of the breechblock into the firing position.
