Abstract
The invention comprises 2 : 4-dinitro-6-cyclo-octylphenol of the formula <FORM:0744389/IV(a)/1> The above compound may be prepared by treating 2-cyclo-octylphenol in chloroform with cold nitric acid. 2-Cyclo-octyl phenol may be prepared by reacting cyclo-octene with phenol in the presence of boron trifluoride-acetic acid as catalyst and separating the 2-cyclo-octylphenol from the mixture of 2-, 4-, cyclo-octylphenol and 2 : 4 - dicyclo - octylphenol formed. In the example cyclo-octene is heated with phenol in the presence of the boron trifluoride-acetic acid complex, excess phenol is extracted with hot water and the residual oil is treated with caustic soda to precipitate 4-cyclo-octylphenol which is removed and 2-cyclo-octylphenol is obtained by distillation of the residual oil. A solution of 2-cyclo-octylphenol in chloroform is treated with concentrated nitric acid, the chloroform layer is washed, dried, passed through a column of activated alumina and after distilling off most of the chloroform 2 : 4-dinitro-6-cyclo-octylphenol is crystallized out.
