Abstract
Quinaldine is obtained from a concentrate derived by the fractional distillation of coal tar bases and containing quinaldine and other heterocyclic nitrogenous bases of similar boiling point, viz. boiling within 5 DEG C. of quinaldine, by a process comprising adding urea or thiourea to the concentrate, separating the resulting precipitate including a quinaldine-urea or -thiourea complex and decomposing the complex to yield quinaldine. The complex consists of two quinaldine molecules linked to the urea molecule but the reaction is quantitative using excess of the urea. The complex is preferably formed from aqueous urea in the presence of a solvent for quinaldine that is inert to both urea and quinaldine, such as toluene or other aromatic hydrocarbon, the reacting mixture being heated to above 80 DEG C. and then cooled to precipitate the complex. In place of the aromatic solvent, a solvent for urea and quinaldine may be used such as ethanol or the urea may be used in very dilute aqueous solution. The complex may be recovered by filtration and then decomposed by heating with water, preferably in the presence of a solvent for quinaldine which is inert to urea and quinaldine and separable from quinaldine by distillation. The recovered quinaldine may be further purified by re-crystallization of its complex from ethanol to remove traces of isoquinoline. An example is given.
