Abstract

744,284. Connectors for tubes. BOULTON TUBULAR STRUCTURES, Ltd. Feb. 3,1955 [Nov. 11, 1953], No. 31197/53. Class 99(1). Tubes 15, 16 are secured in coaxial alignment by a connector comprising a tubular body divided longitudinally into two substantially symmetrical members 1, 2, a collar 3 surrounding the body intermediate the ends thereof, and a bolt 5 which passes freely through and radially of the collar, between two adjacent edges of the members and into engagement with a nut or equivalent tapped member 7 housed internally of the body. By rotating the bolt in the appropriate direction the free end of the bolt shank passes between the members 1, 2 at or in the vicinity of the opposite two adjacent edges of the members thereby separating those edges and expanding the body. As shown, the members 1, 2 have tapered ends and are of angle cross-section, the flanges being of unequal depth and the angle between the flanges being about 60 degrees. The shallower flanges are arranged edge-to-edge, and the deeper flange of each member is formed with an internal bulge 9- and an internal depression 8, the latter being engaged by the adjacent edge of the nut 7 and the bolt 5 passing through a hole 4 in the collar 3 which is in abutment with the ends of the tubes 15, 16. The member 1 has a projecting dovetail tongue 10 loosely engaging in a corresponding dovetail recess 11 in the member 2, and the recess is flanked by projecting ears 13 loosely fitting in pockets 12 flanking the tongue. An aperture 6 formed partly in the tongue 10 and partly in the base of the recess 11 has a diameter greater than that of the bolt 5 and chamfered portions 14 to permit relative rocking movement between the members 1, 2 about the abutting edges thereof. Rotation of the bolt 5 in a direction to abut with and rise over the bosses 9 causes the free edges of the deeper flanges to separate. The internal diameter of the collar may be greater than the internal diameter of the tubes 15, 16, and the interengaging tongue and recess may be of uniform and equal widths, the ears and pockets being wedge-shaped. The free end of the bolt shank may be of frusto-conical shape, the surface of the bosses 9 being correspondingly inclined.
