[Class 20(ii)] [Also in Group XV] A building element in the form of a flanged channel has a male and a female end, the female end having a plate fixed to the flanges across the channel so as to leave a space between it and the flanges and the male end having a plate fixed to the flanges across the channel which extends beyond the end of the channel and forms a flat tongue which can be engaged in a space of the size of that provided by the female end. In one form of construction the plate 18, Figs. 1 and 3, forming the tongue and the plate 14 forming the slot are welded in position, two spaced aligned plates 14 being used for extra security, if necessary. To accommodate the tongue of a member lying at right-angles the plate 14 may be arranged at right-angles to the position illustrated. In a modification, Figs. 8 and 9, the female end of the element may be enlarged as at 28 to receive the central channel 10 of the adjacent member. The flanges 12 near the female end may be turned inwardly as at 30 to provide grooves for the reception of the channel 10 part of which is cut away to allow engagement. In a further modification, Fig. 11, the female end has within it an insert 32 of channel section, the channel 10 being engaged in the space between the insert and the enlarged portion 28. The male end has an insert 34 in the form of a flanged channel which will fit within the insert 32.
