743,815. Vices. HAMPTON, Ltd., C. & J. Sept. 3, 1954 [Sept. 5, 1953], No. 24607/53. Class 61. In a vice in which the screw spindle 8 is threaded through a nut 11 in the base carrying the fixed jaw 4, and projects through the sliding jaw 6 where it is provided with a bar 25 by which it is rotated to open and close the sliding jaw, a sleeve 14 slidable on the projecting spindle is pro vided between the jaw 6 and the head 23 of the spindle, the head 23 having a transverse pivot 24 for the bar 25 that has a cam surface bearing on the outer end of the sleeve 14. A spring surrounding the spindle within the sliding jaw urges the jaws apart. One or more plungers are prcvided to engage any of a number of locating recesses in the sleeve 14 in order to retain the bar 25 in desired angular relation to the spindle 8. The construction of the cam, sleeve and plungers is similar to that disclosed in Specification 743816. The base 1 of the vice carries side wings 3 bridged by the fixed jaw 4. The inverted U-slide 5 for the jaw 6 may have an open end 37 as shown, a washer 38 being carried by the end of the spindle to limit the forward movement of the jaw 6 or the slide may be solid at the end, Fig. 8 (not shown).
