Abstract

Magnetisable powder consisting of particles of mean ultimate crystal size not greater than 1 micron in the greatest dimension is made by forming an intimate mixture of iron oxide, preferably hydrated or anhydrous ferric oxide, with 0,5-5 per cent by weight of one or more of the metals zinc, cadmium, magnesium and aluminium in powder form and heating the mixture in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen for 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours in the temperature range 300 DEG -425 DEG C. The powder mixture may contain cobalt and/or nickel added, for example, as their organic salts as disclosed in Specification 743,792. Where zinc is used it may be added as zinc dust. The powder mixture should be agitated during reduction as by passing the reducing gas through the powder. The product being pyrophoric, should be collected in a protective liquid such as benzene or paraffin or in a solution of plastic insulating material, e.g. phenol-aldehyde resin, in acetone. Specification 590,392 also is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the addition of powder of calcium, barium and/or strontium to the iron oxide and the addition of powder metal in proportions up to 5 per cent.
