Abstract

Manganese ferrites are prepared by heating manganise oxide with ferric oxide, or with a compound decomposable by heat to form ferric oxide, with or without one or more other metal oxides or compounds decomposable by heat to form such oxides, at a temperature not higher than 1350 DEG C. The manganese oxide employed contains less than 1% by weight of silica, and is in the form of particles less than 1 micron in the largest dimension. The manganese oxide is prepared below 100 DEG C., preferably between 70 DEG and 95 DEG C., by electrolytic means, for example by electrolysing an acidified aqueous solution of manganous sulphate at 95 DEG C. In an example, manganese, ferric, and zinc oxides are mixed and heated to 900 DEG C. for 1 hour in air. The resulting material is pulverized, compacted, and sintered at 1200 DEG C. for 1/2 hour in air. The product is cooled in nitrogen, and is suitable for the manufacture of magnetic components such as low-loss cores (see Group XXXV).
