Abstract
A solid resin is prepared from a polymer prepared by the sodium-catalysed polymerization of butadiene-1.3 or a mixture with up to 50 per cent styrene, by heating the polymer at 100-175 DEG C. in the presence of from 2 to 10 per cent of di-tert.-butyl peroxide. The polymer to be treated is preferably an oily polymer of 75-85 per cent butadiene and 25-15 per cent of styrene prepared using sodium catalyst in a mixture of naphtha, dioxane and isopropanol, at 50 DEG C. until the reaction is complete, after which the catalyst is destroyed and the naphtha stripped off. Heating with the peroxide to cure the resin is preferably carried out by stepwise increase in temperature over two to six days in the presence of a promoter, e.g. 0.1 to 10 per cent of maleic, chloromaleic or citraconic anhydride, acylonitrile or an ester of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric, cinnamic, crotonic or vinyl acetic acid, 2 per cent butyl acrylate being preferred. Fillers such as mica, asbestos and silicon may also be present.
