Abstract

1328581 Interpolymers based on modified diene polymers M H RICHMOND 7 June 1971 [8 June 1970] 19262/71 Heading C3G Thermoset resins are produced by interpolymerization of (1) a macromolecular material having a diene polymer backbone and attached thereto recurring pendant units of formula where a is 0, 1 or 2, R 1 is H or C 1-2 hydrocarbyl, R 2 is H or OH, R is H or C 1-3 hydrocarbyl and R<SP>1</SP> is H, C 1-6 hydrocarbyl, ester or halogen, the material having a M.W. of 500-100,000, being substantially free of carboxylic acid and having said recurring units present in an amount of 5-70 mole per cent of the diolefin units, and (2) a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound. The material (1) is described and claimed in Specification 1,328,582. In examples, styrene is co-polymerized in the presence of tert-butyl perbenzoate (and in some cases stabilizers) with various macromolecular materials obtained by reaction of acrylic or methacrylic acid or the methyl half-ester of maleic acid or the methyl half-ester of maleic acid with epoxidized polymers selected from liquid polybutadiene, liquid isoprene, liquid hydroxypolybutadiene, liquid butadiene/styrene copolymer and polystyrene/ polybutadiene/polystyrene block copolymer. In Example 11 certain mixtures also include one or more of methyl methacrylate, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt naphthenate. Prior to the inter-polymerization, compounding ingredients may be included in the mixture, e.g. asbestos filler and zinc stearate in Example 10.
