Abstract

A polymer containing nitrile groups, e.g. a butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer, is reacted with a polyhydric phenol, e.g. resorcinol or Quebrache extract, and a lower aliphatic ketone such as acetone or methyl ethyl ketone. Preferably the polymer containing nitrile groups is reacted with a preformed resinous reaction product of the phenol and ketone. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst such as dry hydrogen chloride, para-toluene sulphonic acid and its acid chloride, and zinc chloride, and results in products containing keto-unine groups, which may be hydrolysed to keto groups with steam or hot water. The products are rubbery materials which can be cured by means of sulphur or hexamethylene tetramine, and may be used as adhesives.
