In a servo-assisted steering mechanism for vehicles, the steering shaft is formed in two axially-aligned parts with coacting abutments at their adjacent ends, there being some lostmotion before the rotary movement of the one part is transmitted to the other, and a member associated with one of the parts moves longitudinally during the lost-motion movement to actuate a valve controlling the servoassisting apparatus. In an embodiment, a bush 4 screwed on the lower end of the steering shaft 1 is formed with a diametral slot 8 into which project lugs 9 formed on the end of a bush 5 splined to a separate shaft, not shown, which is aligned with the shaft 1 and is connected to the usual steering gear of the vehicle. A nut 13 threaded on to the bush 5 is provided with lugs 14 which fit closely in slot 8. When shaft 1 is rotated, the aligned shaft connected to the steering gear will also be rotated to give a direct manual steering effort as soon as the lost-motion between slot 8 and lugs 9 has been taken up. While the lost-motion is being taken up, nut 13 will be rotated relatively to bush 5 and it will advance longitudinally on the bush. A lever with a bifurcated end engaged in a groove 15 around nut 13 will be tilted by this movement and will actuate the valve controlling the servomotor to give a powerassisted steering movement. The bushes 4, 5 are positioned by ball races 10, 11. The slot 8 and lugs 9 may be arranged as a splined, instead of a longitudinal, connection.
