Abstract

Class 79(5) A power assisted steering mechanism has a control valve 6 built into a drag link assembly 19 and actuated by a displaceable member from the pitman or drop arm 32, the displaceable member consisting of a lever 20 or lever assembly pivoted at 22 on the valve housing and having a ball and socket connection 35 with the drop arm and the arrangement being such that an increased displacement of the valve is obtained for a given movement of the drop arm. The drag link assembly also incorporates a power cylinder 2 co-operating with a fixed piston 18 and having its pressure-fluid supply controlled by the valve 6 which is connected by a tongue 26 and a pin 24 to the lever 20. A spring (not shown) biases the valve to neutral position. The drag link assembly 19 includes a ball and socket joint 45 having a spring- loaded wedge 50 to take up play while the ball and socket connection 35 has an extension 37 engaged by a bearing 38 to prevent the drag link assembly pivoting about the ball 35. The bearing may be adjusted in a slideway 39, or alternatively, the slideway or the bearing may be mounted in resilient material to accommodate deviations in the positions of the parts during installation. The lever 20 has an idle movement limited by abutment means to enable the steering to be operated manually in the event of power failure.
