[Class 79 (v).] In servo steering- gear of the kind in which power is brought into use by the relative displacement of two switch parts, one connected to the steering handwheel and the other to the steering shaft, one switch part is adapted to fit the top of the steering-shaft and the other part is provided with means for carrying the steering hand-wheel. Thus, in order to fit the controlling apparatus to an existing steering gear, the steering hand-wheel is removed from the steering- shaft, a unit comprising the two switch parts is fixed on the top of the shaft, and the steering hand-wheel is fixed on the top of the unit. In the construction shown the unit comprises a lower part f having a conical bore b fitting on the cone b<1> of the steering-shaft a, and an upper part k having a cone o fitting into the bore of the hand-wheel c. The part k has a lug i fitting into a recess in the part f, switch contacts g, h being provided on the two parts. Thus, when the part k is rotated by the handwheel the part f is held stationary by the steering-gear, and one or other pair of contacts is closed to energize the servomotor (not shown). If the power supply fails steering is effected positively by means of a lug m on the part k fitting with some play in a recess n on the part f. In order to allow for the length of the unit, the shaft a may be shortened a corresponding amount ; in this case' the end is preferably reduced in diameter and screwed, as at q, so that the hand-wheel and unit may be held thereon by a nut p.
