Abstract

1,200,973. Programmed control of steering. H. TAX. Jan.18, 1968 [Jan.20, 1967], No.2768/68. Heading G3N. A steering arrangement for heavy load road vehicles is characterized in that a steering angle setting motor is assigned to each of the steerable wheels and is controlled by a transmitter cooperating with a steering angle programme carrier and at least part of the steering programme carriers being driven conjointly by a control member. As shown, the wheels 12a-12d of a heavy load road vehicle are steered by similar arrangements which, for wheel 12a comprises a spindle 16a, on which a wheel fork, not shown, is mounted, and to which is fixed a worm-wheel 18a meshing with a worm 20a driven by a motor 22a fed from a power booster 24a. The booster is controlled by the output of a differential circuit 26a one input 28a of which is connected to a transmitter 30a, responsive to the desired steering angle from a programme cam 38a, and the other input 32a is connected to an element 34a measuring the actual steering angle. The programme cam 38a is mounted on a control spindle 40 provided with a control lever 42, the rotation of which enables the steering programme to be carried out. The control spindle is axially movable so that a programme cam 38a<SP>1</SP> can be brought into operation. It is stated that this enables a programme for a curved track or for a lateral track, wherein the wheels remain parallel to one another, to be selected. In a further embodiment, for use with vehicles having an adjustable track-width, varied in accordance with a programme, the steering programme is modified, for a curved track, by using a programme drum, bearing a continuously variable range of steering programmes, which is moved axially with respect to the desired steering angle transmitter by a rod member connected to the output of a track width measuring device.
