Abstract

Solid polyethylene is made by polymerizing ethylene for less than 10 minutes, in a nonaqueous system at a pressure of 20,000 to 30,000 pounds per square inch and a temperature of 110 DEG to 225 DEG C. in the presence of a light aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, in the weight proportion of solvent to ethylene charge of less than 1 : 1 and in the presence as catalyst of benzoyl peroxide or a substituted benzoyl peroxide. The polymerization is preferably effected in a tubular reactor made of stainless steel or chrome-molybdenum. Solvents mentioned are benzene, toluene and mixtures. The polyethylene has a melting range of 110-180 DEG C., a molecular weight of approximately 25,000 to 29,000, a tensile strength of 2000-2100 pounds per inch, and a chloroform solu-bility of 4 per cent or less.
