Abstract
Polyethylene of molecular weight 50,000-750,000 is produced from ethylene by means of a catalyst prepared by mixing at 20-80 DEG C. 1-1,5 mols of dialkyl aluminium monochloride (preferably Et2AlCl) with 1 mol. TiCl4 for a period (e.g. at least 24 hours) sufficient to ensure that the mixture contains no TiCl4. Optional additions to the reaction mixture, per kg of catalyst, are (a) 2-200 1,02; and (b) 1-10 gram-mols of an alcohol. Supplementary portions of dialkyl aluminium monochloride may also be used. In the example, polymerization was carried out continuously, using as reaction medium a C7-10 hydrocarbon fraction, formed in the hydrogenation of CO, which had been purified by hydrogenation over Ni, followed by intensive drying and treatment with said TiCl3.
