Abstract
742,979. Collectors. WILLIAMS, R. E. J. July 23, 1954 [Dec. 18, 1953], No. 35318/53. Class 38 (1). A carbon contact assembly for making contact with the winding 22 of a transformer comprises a grooved carbon contact 5 rotatable in a frame 1 by means of lugged discs 6 having axles 8 passing through holes 9 in side limbs 3, 4 of the frame 1 and holes 10 formed in bearing plates 11. The latter are secured by screwed rods 14 and nuts 15, tightening of which also secures the parts 12, 13 of ball thrust bearings in good contact. The frame 1 is loosely mounted for sliding and limited angular movement in a slide 16 under control of a spring 19, flexible conductors 20 connecting the side pieces 17 of the slide to the frame 1. Four such assemblies are shown mounted on a carrier comprising insulating plates 24, 25 spaced apart by bolts 26 which locate the assemblies. Guides 31 allow the sliding of the carrier on, and also make electrical contact with, a copper bar 29, copper strips connecting the bolts 26 to the guides. A chain and sprocket arrangement is provided for moving the carriage. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), the frame is mounted on the slide by two C-springs, while in yet another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), the contact has a central core of copper to provide for a higher current rating.
