Abstract

742,883. Thermal switches; snap-action switches. SUNVIC CONTROLS, Ltd. Jan. 27, 1954 [Feb .19, 1953], No. 4714/53. Class 38(5) A switch comprises a flexible contactcarrier and a compression element together forming a dead-centre assembly, the end of the carrier remote from the contact being mounted and connected with an operating member for pivotal movement of the carrier and member in unison about an axis perpendicular to the plane of contact movement. In one form, Fig. 3, a trifurcated blade spring 2 has an aperture engaging a groove (not shown) in a screw 15 in the base 11, the operating member 1 being a bimetal strip and being riveted at 12 to the spring 2, the strip 1 having a clearance hole 17 for the screw 15. The other end of strip 1 engages an adjustable abutment 19 in a second bimetal strip 30 supported by a U-shaped member 33 pivoted at 36. The member 33 has an extension 39 engaging an adjusting cam 40. As shown, strip 1 is heated by a coil 43 and strip 30 acts as a compensating strip, but strip 1 may be heated by current through it or the roles of strips 1 and 30 may be reversed. In a modification, Fig. 1. (not shown), the strip 30 and cam 40 are omitted, the abutment 19 being carried by a fixed bracket. Instead of using a bimetal. the switch may be operated by movement of abutment 19. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, the bimetal strip 64 and spring 53 are loosely riveted together and a screw 67 provides a factory adjustment. The strip 64 is held against an abutment 68 by a leaf spring 69. Specifications 419,917, 517,538, 585,972, 683,819 and 710,259 are referred to.
