An arrangement for heating viscous liquid carried in bulk in a ship comprises a container for the viscous liquid and a plurality of tubular heating elements immersed in said liquid the individual elements comprising steel tubes M, Fig. 4, provided with externally-finned cast iron jackets N which preferably are shrunk on to the tubes. Fig. 2 shows a network comprising horizontal transversely-finned heating tubes C and vertical longitudinally-finned tubes V, these latter tubes carrying inlet and outlet manifolds B, F respectively for the admission of hoating steam and discharge of condensate from the network. The heating tubes are made in convenient lengths which are joined together by bends E, which may also be finned, and by coupling sleeves D.
