Abstract
742,603. Woodworking cutters. SHILTON, F. April 21, 1954 [April 21, 1953], No. 10973/53 Class 145 A rotary cutter head, particularly for woodworking, has several transverse grooves 24 for cutters 12 which have a plain or profiled clearance surface 21 ground in an arc centred on an axis 38 or 38a parallel to the body axis 36 but situated forwardly of a line 37 joining the body axis and the cutting edge 20a, and each cutter is held in its groove by one or more bolts 29 or 42 extending through the shank of the cutter. Each bolt may be screw-threaded into the cutter at 31, Fig. 1, with its front end 32 engaging a recess in the forward wall of the groove and its rear end passing through a clearance hole 34 in the rear wall so that tightening of the bolt will force the rear walls of the cutter shank and groove together, matching serrations 9 being preferably formed on the two walls. Alternatively, the rear wall of the groove may be made flexible by means of bores 46, 47, Fig. 4, and a slit 47 so that it can be clamped against the cutter by the bolt 42 screwing into the front wall. The forward part of each cutter has a shoulder 28 resting on. a flat on the body. Normally the cutters are sharpened by grinding the faces 40a but, if the profile is to be modified, the clearance surface is ground while the cutter head is pivoted about an axis 38a and, to assist in setting up, arcs 39 centred on the axes 38a are provided on the body.
