Abstract

1,160,138. Cutting tools. METRO-CUTANIT Ltd. 27 Nov., 1967 [28 Nov., 1966], No. 53161/66. Headings B3C, B3K and B3T. A cutting tool such as a boring, milling or turning tool has a cutting insert 29 removably secured to a holder and means for clamping the insert 29 to the holder in the form of a sleeve 15 rotatable in a bore 11 in the holder, the sleeve having a bore 19 therein, the axis of which is skewed with respect to the axis of the sleeve, a pin 25a rotatable in the skewed bore and having a head portion 25 engageable with a bore 27 in the insert 29 so that rotation of the sleeve in the holder causes the pin to move the insert transversely to the pin axis and to be urged into clamping engagement with abutments on the holder. The holder is in the form of a boring or turning tool shank 1 or milling cutter body 10 and the abutments may be formed by shoulders at the end of a tool shank or alternatively by an adjustable member secured to the holder. Preferably two abutments are provided on the holder and the location of the pin and sleeve in relation to the abutments is such that the insert engages one abutment slightly before the other to ensure a positive clamping and wedging action.
