Abstract

1,164,322. Cutting tools. A. F. HUDSON. 20 Sept., 1966 [7 Jan., 1966], No. 41943/66. Headings B3C, B3K and B3T. A tool holder for use with a removable tool bit 26 has a recess 12 formed therein with at least one abutment face 14 and comprises means 32 disposed solely within the perimeter of the recess and being movable with respect to the abutment face to form a pocket of adjustable size in order to determine the operative position of the tool bit when disposed in the pocket and clamping means 50 to hold the insert in the pocket. The holder may be in the form of a lathe or boring tool shank or a milling cutter body having a plurality of recesses for receiving respective cutting bits. The tool bit is provided with central hole through which the clamping means 50, which is in the form of a threaded member, passes, the head thereof engaging in the bore of the tool bit to hold the bit against the abutment face. Alternative forms of clamping members are described and in a further alternative arrangement the tool bit is clamped by a conventional clamp member which overlies the top surface of the bit. The means for adjusting the size of the pocket may be in the form of a slidable wedge member 166 or a rotatable stop member 116 which can be adjusted and clamped in position whereby the position of the tool bit in the pocket is determined by the relation between the abutment face and the movable member. The position of the wedge member may be determined by calibrations on the tool body.
