Abstract

1,075,484. Machine tool details; milling cutters. MODERN HARDMETALS Ltd. Oct. 18, 1965 [Nov. 6, 1964], No. 45345/64. Headings B3B and B3K. A removable cutter blade or tip of a cutting tool is secured to its shank 10, Fig. 2, by a clamp 16 which is pivoted about a spherical headed screw 20 by a clamping screw 26 to force the tip 14 against a seating surface 12. The clamp 16 includes a loosely connected piece 30 pivoting by means of stud 32 to ensure full face contact with the tip 14, the piece 30 also acting as a chip-breaker that can be adjusted towards or away from the cutting edge of the tip 14 by a screw 38. The seating surface 12 may include a tungsten carbide insert 18. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the loosely connected piece (40) has a part cylindrical portion (42) which can enter an open-sided hole in the clamp 16, the axis of which may be longitudinal or transverse to the clamp 16. The piece (40) has chip-breaking surfaces (46), (48) which are assymmetric with the portion 42 and two positions of the chip-breaker surfaces are possible. The invention is applicable to milling cutters and other cutting tools with removable blades.
