Abstract

742,507. Compressed air engines; valve gear. MADAN & CO., Ltd., C. S. May 20, 1954 [July 1, 1953], No. 18190/53. Classes 122(2) and 122(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] A reciprocating pump for liquids is actuated by a compressed air engine comprising mechanically coupled oppositely acting main and return pistons 13, 30 and cylinders 10, 26, the return piston 30 being of smaller area than the main piston 13, means for supplying compressed air to the operative end of the return cylinder 26 which communicates through a restricted air duct with the operative end of the main cylinder 10, and an exhaust valve 35 in the main cylinder actuated by reciprocating parts of the engine. The pistons are coupled by a common piston rod 29 that passes with a small clearance through a bore 24 in a boss 23 on the main cylinder cover 12 to which the cylinder 26 is connected and is provided with a compressed air inlet 28 communicating both with the bore 24 and the cylinder 26. An extension 31 of the rod 29 extends through the open end of the return cylinder 26 and supports a cup 32 having a flange 33 adapted to contact a spring 38 on the stem 36 of the exhaust valve 35. The space under the main piston 13 is vented through a hole 39 and the lower end 11 of the cylinder 10 is formed as a pump block having a bore 15 in which a piston 14, attached to the piston 13. operates; spring-loaded ball valves 19, 20 being provided in the inlet and delivery passages 17. 18. In operation, compressed air supplied at the inlet 28 enters both cylinders and moves the pistons downwards until the flange 33 opens the exhaust valve 35 to release the pressure above the main.piston 13 and, since the clearance in bore 24 allows only a restricted flow of air, the pressure on the piston 30 returns the pistons until the piston 13 contacts and closes the exhaust valve 35 and the cycle recommences. To increase the speed of the downward stroke of the pistons a differential pressure valve (not shown), may be provided which opens to supply compressed air into the cylinder 10, when the air passing through the clearance in bore 24 has built up sufficient pressure in the cylinder 10 and automatically closes when the exhaust valve 35 is unseated.
