Abstract
742,284. Distillation and like columns. METAL PROPELLERS, Ltd. Sept. 14, 1954 [Sept. 28, 1953], No. 26627/53. Class 55 (2). A bubble tray for distillation and like columns 10 comprises a number of closely spaced parallel tubes 11 between which liquid trickles downwardly and a gas flows upwardly into a layer of liquid supported by the tray, the tubes having provision for their internal heating or cooling. The tubes may have electrical or gas heating means or as shown be connected to headers 14 for the circulation therethrough of a fluid heating or cooling medium. The tubes may be circular or polygonal and the column may be of circular or rectangular section. In the case of a circular column the space between the tube assembly and the walls of the column is occupied by plates 13 and the tubes are supported by transverse members 12. In a distillation column trays whose size decreases progressively, either individually or in groups, from top to bottom of the column may be used. In a modification two headers 14 are provided at each side of the tray one above the other and alternate tubes are connected to different headers, those tubes connected to the upper header having their ends bent upwardly to make the connection.
