Abstract

1,050,268. Refrigerating. AMERICAN RADIATOR & STANDARD SANITARY CORPORATION. Sept. 11, 1963 [Oct. 3, 1962], No. 35824/63. Heading F4H. A refrigerant evaporator containing a pool of liquid refrigerant is provided with a plurality of nozzles arranged to discharge streams of liquid refrigerant into the pool parallel to the bottom thereof. As shown, the evaporator comprises a domed portion 12, a flat base 16 which supports a tube bundle 24 and an axially extending refrigerant supply pipe 26. The nozzles are arranged in groups of three, the nozzles of each group being relatively angled to discharge streams of refrigerant 32 (Fig. 2, not shown) in a fan-like pattern and adjacent groups being arranged to discharge on opposite sides of pipe 26. The evaporator is divided by transverse partitions 42 into three compartments 34, 36, 38 in each of which a generally clockwise circulation of refrigerant is maintained by the arrangement of nozzles 30. Circulation of refrigerant between the compartments in a generally clockwise direction is assisted by nozzles 50 connected to pipe 26 by pipes 48 which nozzles project through apertures 52 (Fig. 1) at the bottom comers of partitions 42, the nozzles being arranged in pairs at each partition to discharge in opposite directions at opposite sides of the evaporator. The refrigerant pool is of a depth sufficient to immerse the lower tubes of the bundle and is covered by a layer of oil. Refrigerant vapour is prevented from rising through the channels at each side of the tube bundle, intermediate channels 54 within the bundle and a central channel 58 by members 64, 60 and 62 so that the rising vapour is constrained to flow over the tubes. An upwardly concave plate 18 is secured to the underside of plate 16 to define a space 66 which is connected to the vapour space 74 of the evaporator by a pipe 72. The pressures on each side of the plate 16 are thus substantially equal to prevent buckling of the plate and space 66 further acts to insulate the bottom of the evaporator.
