[Also in Group XXX] Filter plugs for cigarettes are made by feeding to a garniture 14 filter material in the form of a continuous sliver or rod or as a succession of short plugs, a strip 10 of relatively stout paper which is formed in the garniture into an inner tube surrounding the filter material and having a longitudinal butt joint 10a, Fig. 7, and a strip 21 of thinner paper which is formed into an outer tube having a longitudinal lapped joint 21a, a layer of adhesive 22 being provided between the inner and outer tubes. When the filter material is in the form of a sliver of cotton wool or a rod formed from crepe paper, the apparatus is substantially identical with that shown in the parent Specification with the addition of means for moistening adhesive which has previously been applied to the inner surface of the thin paper strip 21 before it enters the garniture, the adhesive preferably being of the heat-setting type which is set by passing the completed filter rod through an electric heater. In Figs. 2 and 3 the filter material is supplied in the form of short plugs e.g. of rolled crepe paper, from a hopper 30 down a shaking conveyer 31 to a rotating disc 32 which throws the plugs against a stationary outer wall 34 from which they pass through a tubular guide 36 into radial bores in a rotating wheel 38, jamming of the mouth of the tube 36 being prevented by rollers 37. The wheel 38 feeds the plugs into slots in a wheel 39 in which they are held by suction until they are deposited on to the strip 10 of thick paper the inner surface of which may be supplied with adhesive by a glueing device 13. The strip 10 with the filter lengths thereon passes to the garniture 14 along with the strip of thin paper 21 the upper side of which, coated with an adhesive, is moistened by a device 24. In the garniture the strip 10 is folded into a butt-jointed tube surrounding the lengths of filter material and the strip 21 is wrapped around the inner tube and forms an outer tube with a longitudinal lapped joint 21a, Fig. 7, secured to the inner tube by the layer 22 of adhesive. The lengths of filter material may be spaced apart on the strip 10 as shown in Fig. 6 and the resulting filter rod divided to produce filter plugs with tubular extensions. Alternatively, short lengths of two or more different kinds of filter material may be deposited on the strip 10 in alternating succession to enable alternative forms of filter plug to be produced at the same time. In a further modification pieces of filter material of different kinds may be fed so as to be in contact with one another so that each final filter plug embodies more than one kind of filter material. In addition to cotton wool and crepe paper, the filter material may comprise vegetable fibre, asbestos, artificial silk, or plastic foam material.
