741,792. Friction clutches. DANA CORPORATION. Dec. 16, 1953 [May 28, 1953], No. 35025/53. Class 80 (2) In a clutch-plate wherein axial cushioning is provided by two axially-spaced series of circumferentially overlapped resilient sheet metal segments 21, 22 carrying the friction facings 31 and flexed towards each other by clutch-engaging pressure, the friction facings 31 are cement-bonded at 32 to sheet-metal spacer plates 26 secured to the outer faces of the adjacent segments as by spot-welding, riveting or, as shown, eye-letting, by upsetting integral tubular parts 29 pressed from the plates 26. Internal clearance for the eyelets 29 or rivets may be provided by shallow depressions 30 in the inside face of the opposed facing or by through holes therein, such holes also providing accommodation for tools for riveting after attachment of the facings. The flexible segments 21, 22 are all identical and have overlapped forked tails 24 riveted at 17 to the usual circumferential cushion-spring housing 14. Intermediate holes 20 in the housing are for massbalance rivets 19. The cement 32 for attaching the facings may be "cycle-weld," thermoplastic, or a pre-cured phenolic resin which cures finally under the heat and pressure developed in service.
