Abstract

741,609. Chucks. HULL, H. S., and VIDAL, E. M. Jan. 26, 1954 [Feb. 5, 1953], No. 3245/53. Class 83 (3). A self-centring chuck has jaws 12 slidable in inclined slots 11 in a body 10 and the outer face of each jaw is supported by an insert 15 in the outer part 14 of each slot. The sides of the parts 14 may be parallel or converging and may have steps 16 between them and the inner sides 13 engaging the jaws. The inserts may be held by pins or screws 18 passing through or into holes or recesses 9 therein, or by welding, brazing or soldering, or by a combination of these methods. The inserts or the jaws, or both may be of tempered or sintered tool-steel. The ends of the jaws have cylindrical enlargements 20 each engaging a slot in an operating member 21, as described in Specification 705,764, or may have hooks engaging sockets on the operating member. The Provisional Specification describes also slots and jaws with sides converging outwardly, the tops of the slots being left open.
