Abstract

A composition which may be used to treat the surface of a polyvinyl chloride based composition prior to bonding it to a rubber surface consists of "Hycar" OR (Registered Trade Mark), "Bakelite" V 1112 (Registered Trade Mark), and acetone. Alternatively, either the "Hycar" OR or the "Bakelite" V 1112 may be replaced by "Vybak" (Registered Trade Mark) resin.ALSO:Adhesion between surfaces of rubber and polyvinyl chloride based compositions is effected by coating the surface of the rubber with an adhesive composition containing a natural or synthetic rubber, a mixed resinate of a strongly electropositive metal and an amphoteric metal and a solvent, coating the surface of the polyvinyl chloride based composition with an adhesive composition containing at least two of the following constituents:-(a) a synthetic rubber containing acrylonitrile, (b) a vinyl copolymer resin, and (c) a thermosetting resin of the phenolformaldehyde type, and a solvent therefor, evaporating the solvent, and pressing the surfaces together when in an activated condition. Preferably the treated rubber face is activated by heating to a temperature between 50 and 100 DEG C. and the treated face of the polyvinyl based composition is heated to 130 to 150 DEG C. In an example, the adhesive applied to the rubber consists of whole tyre alkali reclaim, calcium zinc resinate, toluene and petroleum ether, the mixed resinate may, however, be obtained by combining wood rosin with either magnesium, calcium, nickel or cobalt and also zinc, aluminium, manganese or lead. In the example the second adhesive consists of "Hycar" (Registered Trade Mark) OR, acetone, and "Bakelite" (Registered Trade Mark) resin No. V.1112. Alternatively this adhesive may be either "Hycar" OR or "Bakelite" V 1112 in acetone together with "Vybok" (Registered Trade Mark) resin. The vinyl copolymer is preferably a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and a minor proportion of wood rosin may also be added. The treated sheets are brought together and may be heated, for example, by infra-red heat in a press or in a floating bowl calender.
