Abstract
Cumene hydroperoxide is made by oxidizing cumene in the liquid phase in the presence of a tetra-alkyl ammonium hydroxide in which the alkyl groups contain not more than five carbon atoms and preferably not more than three carbon atoms. Preferably the reaction is carried out at 100-120 DEG C., e.g. at 110 DEG C., using 0.15-5 parts and more preferably 0.5-3.5 parts of catalyst per 100 parts of cumene. The oxidation may conveniently be started by the action of an initiator which may be tert.-butyl perbenzoate, benzoyl peroxide, 2:2-bis-tert.-butyl-peroxy-butane, or cumene hydroperoxide itself. The reaction may be carried out in a homogeneous liquid phase or in an emulsion. Either pure oxygen or air may be used as the oxidizing gas. Examples are given in which the catalysts specified are tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide, tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide, butyl propyl dimethyl ammonium hydroxide, tetrapropyl ammonium hydroxide and dibutyl diethyl ammonium hydroxide.
