[Also in Groups XVI and XXII] A winding drum for strip material or wire has movable peripheral segments capable of being simultaneously expanded by an hydraulic piston or pistons, each segment being pivoted along one of its longitudinal edges to the drum body, and the thrust of the piston or pistons being applied at or near the other longitudinal edge. In one form, Fig. 4, segments 12 are pivoted at 2b and the thrust of pistons 11 is communicated to the segments by members 13 seated at their ends in notches 11a, 12a in the pistons and segments so as to effect a toggle action. The adjacent edges of the segments inter-engage to bridge the peripheral gap between them. A strip-engaging jaw 8 co-operating with a part 18a of the drum body 1 is operated by pistons 9, Fig. 3, not shown. Springs 6, 7 retract the segments and pistons respectively. In another form, Fig. 5, the jaw and segment operating pistons 19, 20 are diametrically opposite one another and connected by retracting springs 22. A wedge-shaped member 16 operated by the pistons 20 engages between the adjacent edges of the segments to move them outwardly and at the same time fills the gap between them. To obviate difficulties in connection with the packing for the jointing at the inlets for the high-pressure medium, the high pressure required for moving the segments is generated by admitting low-pressure air or liquid to a cylinder 24 rotating with the drum, the piston rod 26 of the cylinder compressing liquid in an axial bore 27 communicating with. the cylinders of the pistons 19, 20.
