Abstract

741,145. Heating air; temperature-responsive actuating-elements. BAILEY METERS & CONTROLS, Ltd. Jan. 8, 1954 [Jan. 8, 1953], No. 604/53. Classes 64(1) and 64(2). [Also in Group XXIX] In a heater employing a heating gas, corrosion of the heat exchange surface due to undue cooling thereof with consequent condensation of vapour in the gas is avoided by incorporating a "simulating" unit which assumes a temperature substantially equal to that of the coolest region of the heat exchange surface, and temperature sensitive means detects the temperature of the unit and actuates a control system to give a warning or to prevent the temperature of the heat exchange surface falling below a pre-determined temperature. Cool air passes along the duct 3 and heating gas passes up the duct 9. The " simulating " unit comprises a tube 11 projecting into the path of the heating gases and some cooling air branched off from the duct 3 is led past an adjustable restriction 55, through the tube 11 and into the stream of heating gas. The temper- ature responsive element comprises a mild steel tube 61 provided with longitudinallyextending slots 63 and welded to the bottom of a longitudinal slot in the tube 11. An invar or silica rod 59 abuts at one end against a plug 65 in the tube 61 and its other end enters a relay casing 97 where it actuates a pilot valve controlling a servopiston connected to a hinged flap valve which controls the distribution of cooling air as between the duct 3 and a by-pass passage. Specification 626,223 is referred to.
