Each plain loop of a pouch of a sea-boot stocking is linked with one plain and an adjacent rib loop of the instep portion. In knitting a 1 Î 1 ribbed instep of the stocking on a superposed cylinder machine two thirds of the needles knit the instep portion whilst the remaining third knit a plain heel, foot and toe pouch. The stocking may be shaped in the leg by gradually increasing the number of wales in which rib loops are knitted. A mitten having a palm portion knitted plain and a back portion knitted of rib fabric may have a pouch or end flap joining the two portions knitted of plain fabric and linked to the rib portion in a similar manner.
