Abstract
740,135. Compressed-air engines; valvegear. AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL. June 9, 1954 [June 29, 1953], No. 16894/54. Classes 122(2) and 122(3) [Also in Group XXIX] A pneumatically operated engine, Fig. 2, for pumping hot liquid to a jacket of a hose line supplying spray material' to a spray gun (see Group XXIX), includes a cylinder 13, a piston 29, a liquid inlet 14 to the cylinder controlled by a suction valve 30, and a outlet 15 controlled by a ball valve 31. The piston rod carries an auxiliary piston 33 in an auxiliary cylinder and a valve throwing member 34, and compressed air is constantly supplied to the auxiliary cylinder through a conduit 41. Compressed air is also fed via conduits 22 and 43 to a valve housing 23 controlling the operation of the engine, and is supplied via conduits 22 and 27 to the upper side of the engine piston when a valve 24 is opened. This valve is opened only when a sleeve 25 is shifted by a membrane 37 from the position shown to a lower position. The sleeve is held in either of its positions by a spring-pressed ball 26. When the piston has reached its lowermost position, as shown, the member 34 opens a valve 35 causing the membrane to move upwards, and the upper end of the engine cylinder is vented through a passage 51, and the auxiliary piston moves the main piston upwardly. In the upper position a valve 46 is opened by the member 34 and the valve 24 is opened to cause the downward movement of the engine piston. In a modification, Fig. 3, the valve arrange ment for controlling the engine operation is mounted within the auxiliary piston 33, and a passage 54 in the piston rod leads to the upper part of the engine cylinder 13. Theauxiliary cylinder is closed at its upper end by a plug 56 and has a vent 57. In the position shown compressed air from an inlet 41 passes through passages 69, 71, 75, and 54 to the upper side of the piston 29 and moves it downwardly until a pin 63 strikes the bottom of the auxiliary cylinder. A valve 61 is opened thereby, and compressed air flows to a chamber 66 which moves a piston 67 to the right and a valve 73 is opened thus causing the upper end of the main cylinder to be vented through passages 54, 75, 71, 76 and the vent 57. The piston 33 is then moved upwardly until a valve 60 is opened by the plug 56 and the chamber 66 is vented. The piston 67 is thereby moved to the left and closes the valve 73 and compressed air is again supplied to the upper side of the piston 29.
