Abstract
<PICT:0739213/III/1> In a fluidizing process for roasting sulphide ores, particularly zinc blende, the main oxidizing current of air is injected so as to cause three distinct zones of material to be formed-an upper zone of normal fluidized conditions, an intermediate zone of intense turbulence and a lower zone of no fluidization, from which the completely roasted ore is withdrawn. In Fig. 2 the ore is fed through a pipe 15 and the principal air supply is admitted through nozzle 4 from chambers 3 in streamlined hollow bars 2 which restrict the cross-section of the reactor whereby a zone of intense turbulence is produced at this level, above which is a zone of normal fluidization extending up to level 17. To complete the reaction, a secondary air supply insufficient to agitate the ore is admitted through nozzles 6 from chamber 5 in the lower parts of the bars 2, and the unfluidized bed 7 is traversed by a small tertiary air supply admitted at 9. The roasted ore is withdrawn by a conveyer 10.
