Abstract

In the production of calcium cyanamide by reacting comminuted calcium carbonate with ammonia, the ammonia is passed through a bed of calcium carbonate at such a speed as to effect stirring of the bed without causing a substantial quantity of calcium carbonate to be entrained. In the example an upright tube, having a porous diaphragm, is heated from outside, while a stream of nitrogen is passed through, to 750 DEG C. milled marble of size + 1600 meshes/cm.2-2500 meshes/cm.2 was introduced and a stream of ammonia admixed with carbon monoxide in 50 : 50 volume proportion is substituted for the nitrogen, at a gas velocity of about 400 l./hr., while the temperature is brought to 770-775 DEG C., and maintained at this value for 2 hours.
