Abstract

Toluic acids prepared by the liquid phase, air oxidation of xylenes (said acids being admixed with neutral materials having a boiling range close to that of the acids), are purified by washing the crystallized acids with a saturated, liquid hydrocarbon having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms per molecule. Said hydrocarbon is, for example, propane, butane, pentane, isopentane, hexanes, heptanes, cyclohexane, methyl and dimethyl cyclopentanes, methyl and dimethyl cyclohexanes or a mixture thereof (e.g. petroleum ether), and may contain minor amounts of mono-olefins of similar carbon content. The extraction temperature is preferably conducted at temperatures below 50 DEG C., and may be combined with the prior crystallization step by charging a molten toluic acid fraction into an excess of the hydrocarbon solvent. The process is also applicable to the purification of toluic acids additionally contaminated with aliphatic acids.
